The Royal Sportsman Hotel

Notes From a Small Island

The Royal Sportsman is Porthmadog's only hotel which has been awarded a star rating by the AA and Visit Wales. It is a full service quality 3*** star premier hotel and is considered to be the very best within its rating in this area.

It is also referred to in a number of International guides, magazines and brochures.

Over the last ten years, after a previous decade of neglect, its present owners have slowly but extensively refurbished the hotel throughout with support from the Wales Tourist Board and Gwynedd Council, without losing its character and charm. The new house style was completed in 2007 although investment to improve the customer experience is always on-going. It is once again the quality hotel it used to be.

The main part of this Victorian Hotel was built in 1862 followed by the addition of the restaurant in the 1920's and patio garden rooms in the mid 1960's. The physical structure of the Hotel was built using local Blaenau Ffestiniog slate which is still visible from the outside. Many of the original features, particularly the stone and slate fireplaces in Gelert's Bar and Lorenzo's Coffee Lounge, have been restored.
The Hotel was originally built to be the main staging post in the area since the Cambrian Railway did not arrive in Porthmadog until 1867. However, it soon became famous for its own liveried carriage and horses, stabled in what is now the garage, taking customers from the Hotel to their holiday destinations. Photos of the harbour, slate trains, tall masted ships and hotel are found in Gelert's bar.
It is located in the centre of Porthmadog at the quieter end of the High Street-a town often described as the "Gateway to Snowdonia" where sea, beaches, town and magnificent countryside come together.

Porthmadog is the perfect location and base from which you can explore the Cambrian Coast, the Llyn Peninsula, the entire Snowdonia National Park and Anglesey.
