 Newsbriefs March 2013

Welcome To Our Fresh Bitesize Newsbriefs!

Welcome to our new snippets-style news and information sheet about the Royal Sportsman, its staff, guests and Porthmadog. We hope you will find it both interesting and entertaining. We aim to send it out when there is something to say. We regularly update our new Facebook page weekly to ensure those who 'like' us most get the latest 'chat' as soon as it's happened!

If you have any news, please send it to me. I'm Ian Spindley, working on reception which I really enjoy – apart from the occasional early-morning shift! Increasingly, I am involved in marketing, sales and public relations work as I was a journalist making documentaries in Wales, and before that the local newspaper reporter for Porthmadog and wider Gwynedd. So I'm very familiar with the area and its people - as they say, I 'know my onions' news-wise!

Local Group Meetings Welcome - Free!

The Royal Sportsman is keen to become even more accessible and welcoming to our local community especially the area's many and varied voluntary groups.

During some of our daytimes and particularly in the winter, our beautiful, spacious and comfortable lounge is available as a meeting place for community/voluntary groups at no charge. Several have already taken advantage of this offer.

Loyalty Card A Real Privilege!

Forever more you can enjoy a valuable saving on all food and hot beverages at the Royal Sportsman with our unique new Privilege Loyalty Card.

With the card, many dozens of new or regular guests and individual residents, members and organisers of local clubs, societies or associations, are already saving 10% off their bill for food, teas or coffees from our regular lunch, afternoon tea or dinner menus.

This offer has almost unlimited use – except for Christmas and New Year lunches/dinners – and is available indefinitely. It can only be used by the named individual holder but for as many guests as you wish, including at formal and informal meetings here.

Applying for a card is very simple. Please contact us via e-mail, telephone or post or visit the reception in person to receive your individual card. We just need your name, home address,
e-mail address and telephone number(s).

On receipt, show the card on each of your visits to make valuable savings.

New Faces On Staff Frontline

Congratulations to bar manager Daniel Croiala and his fiancée Emma on the birth of their baby boy, Andrei in Ysbyty Gwynedd, Bangor, in February, a grandson for Viorica and Louis Naudi.

Steffan Jones, 23, born and bred in Porthmadog, has joined the bar staff and is an excellent junior golfer.

The Royal Sportsman is a keen promoter of work placements and training and has an enviable trackrecord of successes. Over the last few weeks, three of our staff excelled in their traineeship work here and at college where they have deservedly been officially recognised.

Junior chef Robbie Walker won a silver medal in the Welsh International Culinary Championships Junior Awards and he came very close to getting gold. For his two main lamb dishes, Robbie had just three days to perfect the recipes and only 30 minutes to prepare, cook and plate them to the highest standards.

Deputy restaurantmanager Petru Doru Ragazan won Coleg Menai's hospitality student of the year, while commis chef Llion Williams, 18, of Porthmadog, is thehotel's youngest NVQ level 3 student and finalist in the awards. He is earmarked as a gold winner in 2014.

Pictured below are: Robbie Walker, Petru Ragazan and Llion Williams.

And there's more. . .

Freshfields Open Day

Many of you may know, both Viorica and Louis Naudi sponsor Freshfields animal rescue centre in nearby Nazareth. If you are going to be in Porthmadog over Easter, they would be delighted for you to drop into the Royal Sportsman between 10am and lunchtime on Saturday 30th March for a Spring Fair & Coffee Morning. We are encouraging as many pet lovers as possible to visit to help raise further funds for the centre.

The Royal Sportsman donates money, sponsors coffee mornings and open days and, since 2012, monies from charging non-guests £1 for using WIFI. If you are thinking of adopting a cat or dog for home, or volunteering to sponsor Freshfields yourself, please come along to find out more. Alternatively, contact Lesley at Freshfields.
