Welcome to our new snippets-style news and information sheet about the Royal Sportsman, its staff, guests and Porthmadog. We hope you will find it both interesting and entertaining. We aim to send it out when there is something to say. We regularly update our new Facebook page weekly to ensure those who 'like' us most get the latest 'chat' as soon as it's happened!
If you have any news, please send it to me. I'm Ian Spindley, working on reception which I really enjoy – apart from the occasional early-morning shift! Increasingly, I am involved in marketing, sales and public relations work as I was a journalist making documentaries in Wales, and before that the local newspaper reporter for Porthmadog and wider Gwynedd. So I'm very familiar with the area and its people - as they say, I 'know my onions' news-wise!
Interest Groups Visiting Porthmadog
In 2013, a number ofspecial interest groups will be visiting Porthmadog and staying with us for the first time ever. These include steam railway buffs, classiccar owners, golfers, Harley Davidson motorcyclists, Women's Institutes, University of the Third Age branches, and ramblers' clubs. This is a tremendous boost to the area and reduced entry fees and other benefits at a number of key local visitor attractions has been a major influence.
Enjoy Visitor Attractions Savings With Us
We all know that holidays are becoming more expensive, so we have successfully approached over 20 selected, key visitor attractions to organise reduced entry fees and other incentives for our guests. Attractions include the Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways, Portmeirion, and the Llechwedd Slate Caverns to name but a few. Unique vouchers are available from reception for both individuals and groups to hand in at their chosen attraction.

Electric Car Charging A First
The Royal Sportsman is now the first hotelin Gwynedd to offer guests with plug-in transport, the use of two Electric Vehicle Charging Stations comprising a 13A socket and 32A connector. Guests can top up their car or recharge their vehicle at no charge. We have already had three electric car drivers stay and are looking forward to more guests taking advantage of this service. Please advise us when booking your stay if you wish to use these units.
Refurbishment - Just Like Forth Bridge!
Guests whovisit regularly will have seen many changes over the years. Some will remember how badly run-down the building and rooms had become when Louis Naudi took over in 1998.
In December 2011, we began a two-year programme of refurbishing every bathroom with a consistent design throughout. And that was completed in February 2013. Louis says: "Our en-suites looked tired and dated and we felt this was the last major area of refurbishment inside.
"We have now finished all the bathrooms with a new colour scheme, modern furniture and accessories which look great but are also easier to clean and maintain." Over that same period, the rear of the building - the courtyard area - was completely rebuilt.
Louis adds: "While these changes are important, it is not a pretentious or fashionable establishment nor do we wish for it to become one. We simply wish to be a very good old family place which has been modernised to ensure guests and customers more than enjoy their stay."

With the card, many dozens of new or regular guests and individual residents, members and organisers of local clubs, societies or associations, are already saving 10% off their bill for food, teas or coffees from our regular lunch, afternoon tea or dinner menus.
This offer has almost unlimited use – except for Christmas and New Year lunches/dinners – and is available indefinitely. It can only be used by the named individual holder but for as many guests as you wish, including at formal and informal meetings here.
Applying for a card is very simple. Please contact us via e-mail, telephone or post or visit the reception in person to receive your individual card. We just need your name, home address, e-mail address and telephone number(s). On receipt, show the card on each of your visits to make valuable savings.
Good Food Guide Nominations
If you have enjoyed dining at the Royal Sportsman, would you might nominate it for The Good Food Guide's highly regarded Readersrestaurant of the Year awards?
The awards celebrate great food and service at independents, such as ours in Wales, across ten different UK regions. Simply, the criteria are that they should be independently run and offer regional or local produce where possible.
Diners can nominate us online via The Good Food Guide online feedback form until 14 April 2013. Everyone who submits a nomination will be entered into a free prize draw for a meal for two at the regional winning establishment most local to the winner.
